Palm drops app submission fee, extends the 50% off sale as well

I know, I say it every time. Palm is the best company in the world when it comes to developer relations. They are doing everything in their power to make developers happy without outright paying them under the table to develop. Palm has sent out emails to WebOS developers stating that the $50.00 fee per app submission is now being waived. It used to cost $50.00 every time a developer wanted to submit an app to the App Catalog. This is actually cheaper than on other platforms, but Palm felt like it was still too expensive and completely eliminated the cost all together. Not only did they reduce the admission fee, but they are refunding $50.00 to developers who have already paid the Fee. Furthermore, Palm is continuing their 50% off all apps in the App Catalog promotion until July 23rd. As a reminder, Palm is giving all apps in the App Catalog a 50% discount while still allowing developers to obtain the full amount of their cut prior to the reduction.

Palm is also starting another Hot Apps promotion. The previous Hot Apps promotion was to give away $1,000,000 in prizes to developers that develop robust and popular apps using the Mojo SDK. In their newest Hot Apps promotion, they will have $1,000,000 in prizes for developers who create apps using Palm’s PDK. The PDK uses C/C++ development tools which were previously excluded in the Hot Apps promotion. So get out there and develop some graphically robust apps devs! We have all of the promotion, give aways, and awesome interactions with Palm to encourage developers to make apps for WebOS. All we need now is some good hardware and WebOS 2.0. Come on HP/Palm we are all waiting!

Here is the quote from Palm sent to developers:

These are exciting times for Palm and our developer community. The Hot Apps promotion that we kicked off back in February is about to end with over 400 developers receiving a share of a million dollars. We recently launched the Summer Half Off promotion—a 50% discount for nearly every app in our catalog that was funded by Palm; developers still get their full earnings for each sale, but customers get half off. And we’re just getting started.

In July, we’re launching the new PDK Hot Apps promotion—another million dollars to developers, this time focused on the C/C++ apps that were excluded from the original Hot Apps promotion.

And we have one more program change that will benefit all developers. When we launched the developer program, we introduced a $50 per app fee to submit apps into our catalog. Effective immediately, we’re waiving this fee and refunding to all developers any $50 fees collected in the past. If you’re one such developer, you will see a credit in your PayPal account in the near future.

Thank you for being part of the webOS community. We will continue to evolve the Developer Program as together we build an incredible application catalog for customers.
