Android 2.1 is now more popular than all other versions combined

Android 2.1 was first released on the Nexus One in January and took a while before other manufacturers finally got it up and running. Though it took long, it has happened. Android 2.1 is now on 53% of all Android devices. What is new though is that Android 2.2 is already on 1.8% of devices and hasn’t even hit most of the Nexus Ones out there. For those worried that this version difference is going to be a problem between Android 2.1 and 2.2. Don’t be. Any applications that work on Android 2.1, work on Android 2.2 as well. In fact, more than 90% of the applications made for Android 1.5 and 1.6 also work on Android 2.1/2.2 so that also isn’t an issue. What we do want though is for all those 1.5/1.6 devices to soon be upgraded to at least 2.1. This will happen as soon as Motorola and HTC update their older devices. Also, now that some of those older devices are approaching the 2 year life mark, a lot of people will upgrade to higher end Android phones with 2.1 or higher. Moto, HTC, and Samsung, please get Android 2.2 on your brand new devices ASAP! Thanks.
