Android already outselling the iPhone by 41% worldwide according to Apple and Google

I want to preface this by saying that these numbers are all based off numbers Google and Apple have given. Okay now let’s get started. Today Apple had its financial results. What they’ve told us is that they have sold 8.4 million iPhones in the last 3 months. Yes this number is huge, but how big is it? Does Android even compare to Apple in terms of sales? According to Apple and Google, the answer is yes.

Recently at Motorola’s Droid X event, Google’s Andy Rubin said that they are now activating 160,00 devices per day. There are a few things to note here with the numbers given to us. The first thing is that this 160,000 number will most likely grow a lot in the next few months. When he said 160,000 phones per day, there was no Samsung Vibrant, Captivate,  HTC Aria, or Motorola Droid X for sale. In the coming months there will also be the Samsung Epic, Fascinate, and a Droid 2 on sale on 3 different networks. So we can pretty confidently say that we know the number ‘160,000’ is going to go up. So with that let’s get into the cold hard facts. 8.4 million iPhones sold in 3 months. 3 months is approximately 90 days. That is pretty simple math right? 8.4 million divided by 90 days equals the amount of phones sold per day. Well the answer is (rounded up) 94,000. This means that Apple was selling just under 100,000 phones per day for the last 3 months. This is a worldwide number, not just in the United States. Android on the other hand, is already selling 160,000 phones per day. So lets do the math in the opposite direction. 160,000 phones sold per day multiplied by 90 days. That number is 14.4 million. If what Google and Apple both are saying is true, then Google is already out-shipping Apple in terms of OS sales on phones by about 41%. Does this mean Google won?

No! This doesn’t mean Google won. It doesn’t mean Apple is going to be killed. Both players are going to remain in the market for a long time. However, Apple is no longer the king. At least for now according to these numbers. The new iPhone 4 is selling very well already and it looks as though both companies are going to continue to grow. This also does not mean any other companies have lost. Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7, Blackberry OS, Nokia, and Palm are all possible forces in the market. The smartphone market is still small compared to the cellphone market over all. There is one thing we definitely know for sure. Next year Google is going to need to hold their Google I/O conference in a much bigger venue.

😀 I don’t hate apple, but I do loooove android. My wife on the other hand is an avid iPhone user, and I think that this along with Apple’s recent iPhone 4 blunder might motivate apple to step it up, and dare I say, maybe even start releasing more that one type of iPhone? Only time will tell, but I think they would surely benefit from more variety and of course CDMA versions as well.
