Clearwire testing LTE in Arizona; Sprint to get a multi-mode WiMAX/LTE network?

Sprint’s WiMAX wireless broadband provider Clearwire is beginning to test different type LTE in Phoenix, Arizona. Starting this fall, Clearwire is testing a “multi-mode WiMAX/LTE network” which may prove to be an even faster LTE network that both AT&T and Verizon Wireless plan to roll out.

When the multi-mode testing commences in Phoenix, Clearwire is aligning itself with 4G chip manufacturer Beceem and other partners to figure out the best ways for end users’ mobile devices to take advantage of a mixed WiMAX/LTE network. Clearwires goal in all this is try and “future-proof” it’s network. Also, Clearwire and Sprint can conceivably provide faster data speeds than AT&T or Verizon, because Clearwire and Sprint only use an estimated 30% of the total spectrum licenses available to them in most markets.
