Motorola Xoom to cost $800?!

No, that is not a typo; a recent post over at AndroidCentral containing information from an apparently reliable tipster regarding the MAP (minimum advertised price) has just hit the tubes.  According to the screenshots provided by the tipster, the MAP for the Motorola Xoom appears to be $799, quite a bit higher than anticipated.  The screenshots details information on the HTC Thunderbolt’s MAP as well, coming in at a much more acceptable $249.  Hit the link to find out more.

The big question regarding the content of these screenshots is whether not they relate to subsidized prices or unsubsidized prices.  It is believed the HTC Thunderbolt’s price is that of the subsidized variety, while the Xoom is of an apparent unsubsidized persuasion.  No word on what the contractual price for the Xoom will be (if this is in fact the unsubsidized price), but my money is on $499 – this would allow for Motorola and Verizon to offer the Xoom at a competitive price point a few months ahead of the expected iPad 2’s release.  Only time will tell if speculation holds true, but anything higher than $599 would be the equivalent of shooting this little beautiful tablet in the foot just before the starting gun sounds off.

Motorola Xoom specifications from our Xoom announcement post:

…the Xoom sports a 10.1-inch 1280×800 screen capable of displaying 1080P video.  It comes bundled with Verizon 3G(which is said to be fully upgradeable to 4G LTE later in the year), a front-facing 5MP camera capable of capturing 720P video partnered with a rear-facing 2MP camera for videochatting, and an SD card slot for additional storage.  All of those specifications are made possible thanks to Nvidia’s Tegra 2 SoC…

Come on Motorola.

You know, I would say that is over priced. But its not. The Olaf is so cheap because the specs are completely horrible.

    Xoom specs :
    1280×800 resolution

Ports: universal Micro USB, MicroSD,(HDMI out?)

    • That’d hold true, if the Xoom’s intended competitor was the current generation iPad. An accurate cost comparison of the iPad 2 and the Xoom isn’t quite possible yet, but from what we’ve heard, the iPad 2 will match if not best (admittedly by a small margin) most the specifications of Motorola’s tablet, all at a rumored price point of 599/699 unsubsidized.

Impossible to make any real assessments currently, all the specifics are churning their way through the rumor mill still.

Edit: If the iPad is the intended competition, and not the iPad 2, then I’ve given Motorola far too much credit. Competing against year old technology is silly.
