Sony PSOne Games Coming to Android Devices via Playstation Suite!

PS Sony’s new Playstation Suite was not the show stealer at Sony’s press conference in Tokyo (see NGP), but it is still huge news for the mobile industry. Playstation Suite is a software framework that will allow Playstation One games to be ported over to Android devices running Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) later this year. This is not only huge news because it’s awesome, but because it marks the first console maker to port over their own ecosystem to cellphones/tablets (In no small part due to the previous limitations of cellphone/tablet GPUs I’m sure).

Sony’s PlayStation Phone is real and coming soon!

Folks, what you are looking at is REAL and Sony is building it using Android as the OS. Engadget reports that the phone contains Android 3.0, along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device sports 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, screen size about 3.7 to 4.1 inches, a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons and best part, no Sony Memory sticks but it does have support for microSD cards.

Head on over to Engadget for more information and pics.

HTC ditches Samsung AMOLED stock problem; picks Sony Super TFT LCD displays

In a move by HTC not to have pre-orders and current orders cancelled, HTC has decided to migrate away from Samsung’s AMOLED to Sony’s new Super TFT LCD displays for their selection of handsets. The move comes in response to Samsung’s ability to deliver the AMOLED  die to a production shortage. This may also be due to the fact that Samsung has a massive, world-wide marketing campaign for the new Galaxy S series of handsets, now being launched on five carriers in the United States alone.

We know that Sony builds some quality product but we are very curious to see how the new Super LCD’s stand up in comparison with Samsung’s AMOLED and see performance difference between the two in direct sunlight.

OMG RUMOR! Sony Ericsson to release 5.5″ QWERTY Android 2.1 Tilt phone?

Oh Em Gee indeed, it seems as though those freaky little engineering wizards at Sony Ericsson are working on another Android device with an impressive 5.5″ screen, according to a SoftSailor informant somewhere deep within the bowls of the R&D department.  As seen on the left, the unknown Sony Ericsson device has a very nicely spaced keyboard (WTF Motorola? Droid typing makes my fingers hurt), a nifty tilting screen ala HTC Tilt and the like and stock Android 2.1 (With no plans for Android 2.2 yet, according to the tipster) completely unmodified due to a lack of low-level drivers.  Mobile phone screens are becoming very much an issue of size, not how you use it.  Look for Sony Ericsson and HTC to sponsor the Viagra car this year in NASCAR!  WOO!

GetJar Study: Mobile Apps To Grow $17 Billion by 2012

I had an opportunity to sit down with Bill Scott, V.P. Sales & Business Development of GetJar.com at last years Mobilize event in San Francisco to discuss mobile apps. Today,  GetJar, the premiere independent mobile app store with more than 60,000 mobile apps on hand for major mobile platforms: Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile, put out a study that predicts a gold rush in the number of mobile apps and the increase in size of the mobile app marketplace.

According to the study, performed by Chetan Sharma Consulting, mobile app downloads should jump from 7 billion in 2009 to almost 50 billion in 2012. The market is estimated to be worth approximately 17 billion dollars. GetJar CEO Ilja Laurs makes another statement, echoing the one from a Google executive. “It is easy to see how mobile apps will eclipse the traditional desktop Internet. It makes perfect sense that mobile devices will kill the desktop,” he said. Mr. Laurs backs up this claim with more data from the study, citing that 17% of GetJar users spend more time on internet-linked smartphones than they do on desktops.

Evernote plans for Vaio, N900, and Apple’s iPad

Today Evernote sent out an Email to their users informing them of future plans and partnerships. first up, they say Sony’s Vaio lineup is now going to come with the newest version of Evernote’s desktop software. This will help Sony in the fact that Evernote is amazing software and the newest version has really great new features and capabilities. This can help make the Vaio’s out of box experience a little bit better. It does seem as though Evernote is getting the better end of the bargain here since it’s Evernote software user base and brand recognition should increase with Evernote being included on new Vaio computers.
