Opinion: Why the iPad might remain the king of tablets in 2011

This is the short break before it all explodes folks. We are just weeks away from the explosion of Android tablets on the market as well as the Blackberry Playbook and whatever new WebOS tablet HP has in store. The general consensus is that the iPad will of course sell well, however the Android tablet market as well as the Playbook and WebOS tablets will eat into the iOS tablet market. Essentially this would put Android on top much like it has already done in the smartphone market due to sheer number of manufacturers producing tablets. And though I am not an analyst of any kind, I want to make a prediction. My prediction is that iOS tablets (iPad 1 and iPad 2) will remain the best-selling tablets, at least through 2011. Here is why.

Verizon holding a media event on Tuesday, Verizon iPhone or something else?

Verizon just made a huge showing at CES, but that doesn’t seem to be enough. Verizon has just sent out invitations to a press event they are holding this Tuesday. So what is all the hoopla about? Well if Verizon had any other phone announcements besides the iPhone, wouldn’t it have been made at their huge CES keynote? It makes perfect sense that Verizon would want to announce the iPhone separate from the rest of CES since Apple doesn’t ever make an appearance at CES. The weird thing is that usually when there is an announcement about an Apple product that has this much media attention and hype, it is usually made by Apple themselves. So if this isn’t the Verizon iPhone what else could it be? It could be that long rumored HTC Merge, it could also be (yes this is a dreamland I am in) a HTC tablet announcement. Okay who knows, we’ll wait with you and find out on Tuesday what Verizon is up to.

CES: AT&T announces the Samsung Infuse, Galaxy S with new 1.2ghz Hummingbird and 4.5inch Super AMOLED Plus

Would you look at that? It finally happened. AT&T is getting serious about Android. It only took about 2 and 1/2 years, but it happened. Well, at least from my point of view, all can be forgiven. AT&T just announced the new super beast phone called the Samsung Infuse. The Samsung Infuse is, at least at the moment, the highest of high-end phones. It makes all other Samsung Galaxy S devices look pretty old (especially since they are all still stuck on Android 2.1 here in the United States). Here is a run down of what this new phone is packing.

Google Nexus Two coming to Europe first?

Not wanting to be on the carrier side again, it appears that Google has inked a deal with Europe’s Carphone Warehouse, according to a report my City A.M. The deal with Carphone represents a major rethink of Google’s sales strategy, with the Nexus One released exclusively in the UK through Vodafone. An industry source said: “It looks like Google is experimenting with the future of its mobile model in the UK. It tried releasing through a single carrier, now it is trying a single retailer. “It could be a solution to the problems it experienced when it tried to sell the Nexus One exclusively through its website. People like to be able to go to a store – this solves that.” Well we look forward to a new Nexus to grace our pizza, greasy hands.

Microsoft to hold all day press event on October 11th

We all know Windows Phone 7 is just around the corner. Microsoft promised it would be released “in time for the holidays”. It looks as though they are going to keep true to that promise and give the official launch date, prices, and vendors on October 11th. Engadget received an invitation to a Microsoft press event in London on October 11th, thus the speculation of a Phone 7 announcement. The event runs from 2:00 PM to 5:30PM. This, much like many other press events, will probably be show and tell with some hands on and play time to follow. We will be keeping an eye out for any new news and surprises to come out of the event. Yes Microsoft you can blow everyone’s mind by saying copy/paste and multi-tasking will be available at launch.

WebOS 2.0 video preview hits the Tube

WebOS users have been waiting with bated breath for the latest version of WebOS to finally be released to the world. Well, like with any mobile OS before it is released, there is some video footage that hit YouTube. It is a very short video, but wow WebOS 2.0 does look pretty amazing. The only thing that really seemed disappointing was how long it took Quick Office to load in the emulator. It gives me reason to believe that WebOS 2.0 is still going to suffer from the lag WebOS 1.4.5 still has today. I hope this isn’t true, but we will see. On the other hand, the new ‘Stacks’ feature is pure amazing for the browser. You can have multiple taps displayed in these stacks of cards. Just amazing. I really can’t wait to use this. Check out the video walk-through after the break… Read more of this post

The Galaxy Tab to run between $200 and $400?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung executive Hankil Yoon, informed them that the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be running for a very reasonable $200-$400 price range. This is all dependent on subsidies of course. If the price can be reduced to $200 on a 2 year contract and $499 without, then Samsung has a winner. It may seem hard to compete with the iPad at a similar price off contract, however the Samsung Galaxy Tab is better in every way. Dual cameras, Flash 10.1, almost half the weight, smaller more portable size, but still packing a big enough screen to enjoy games, E-Reading, and web browsing. This thing is a winner so far in our books, though we do need to get our hands on one to make sure we like this thing in real life as much as we do from afar. Would you sign a 2 year contract for a $200 Galaxy Tab or would you prefer to pay full price? Read more of this post

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab revealed, on paper it bests the iPad in almost every way

Today is the launch of, well lets be honest, the iPad’s first real competitor. The Samsung Galaxy Tab was unveiled today in Berlin Germany and there is a lot to like about this device. In fact, there is so much to like about the device I went with the semi-controversial title stating that the Galaxy Tab is in fact better than the iPad. Well that is on paper at least. So what does this thing come with? Read on after the break for the full spec list… Read more of this post
