How To: Fix your iPhone 4/3Gs/3G or iPod Touch: The Complete Guide

I got asked by a friend the other day, “Hey, do you know how to repair an iPhone 4? I dropped it and broke my screen.” I said, go on the interwebs. He looked at me with a daze and said, “I can’t find a good source. Do you know someone that will fix it?” Stunned, I told him to GO ON THE INTERWEBS because I know there are a ton of sites that give you step by step instructions for repairing your phone. That got me to thinking, there really isn’t a one-stop-shop (source) for all of this information compiled into one page. So as I sit here on my day off, I realize that this is something I can do without spending a lot of hours. So here it goes.

Flash on your iPhone? YES!

Every iOS user knows that the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad does not support flash content on the internet. We’ve all wanted it, but Apple refuses to add flash support to the iOS devices. Third party applications for jailbroken iPhones can support it now with a plug-in called Frash, but what if you do not want to jailbreak your iPhone? Or simply can’t jailbreak it as of now? Well here is the solution for flash on your iPhone. You don’t need to jailbreak your iPhone or do anything special. All you need to do is download, Cloud Browse, from the App Store.  Cloud Browse is a Firefox style browser, which means the browser is just like the one you would have on your Mac or PC.

In MobileSafari flash content does not open up, but in Cloud Browse, it opens up and plays the full flash content. It is not as clear as a desktop browser, but it gets the job done when you need to view flash on the go. There are pros and cons. Pros are that Cloud Browse loads flash content that all iPhone users want. It loads web pages faster than MobileSafari. Some cons are, It is not as smooth as MobileSafari, like scrolling pages. Also the content is not as clear on the screen.

Here is the review and comparison of Cloud Browse to MobileSafari

T-Mobile getting iPhone later this year?

Here we go again. Another T-Mobile getting the iPhone rumor, except this is mentioned by someone in the know. Like Chris Anderson, the EIC of Wired magazine. Chris stated “A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they’re going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year. Common knowledge?” Well I guess so Chris because if they mentioned that to you, then it must be common knowledge that T-Mobile is getting the iPhone, just not iPhone 4. Looks like T-Mobile will be getting the 3GS instead. It is hard to fathom that this would actually happen, but Apple may have an exclusive agreement with the iPhone 4 until next year, it may not preclude Apple from selling the 3GS on another carrier.

iOS 4.1 beta 3 released, cuts loose ends with iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G

iOS 4.1 beta 3 was released earlier to developers, almost a week after beta 2. While there is no change log included in this release, hopefully it means 4.1 is getting closer to a final release. The bad news with this release though was Game Center was unfortunately dropped from iPhone 3G and second gen iPod Touch users. There is no reason or mention from Apple for this but it looks like Game Center was too good to be true on those devices.

Apple iOS 4.1 beta 2 for developers now available

Apple has posted up a new beta os iOS 4.1 for the iPhone. The first beta of 4.1 was released about two weeks ago on July 15th. Redmond Pie has put together a couple of noticable differences in this beta version.

  • iOS 4.1 Beta 2 contains a new baseband for iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G. If you rely on an unlock, DO NOT update to Beta 2.
  • Build number of iOS 4.1 Beta 2 is 8B5091b.
  • Gizmodo reports that this build has apparently solved the proximity sensor issue which was plaguing some iPhone 4 users since launch.
  • The Next Web reports that iOS 4.1 may have fixed the slowness issue of iOS 4 / 4.0.1 on iPhone 3G.

Glad to see it fixes a couple issues with the proximity sensor and actually makes the iPhone 3G a usable phone. Developers point your mouse here to download iOS 4.1 beta 2.

[How To] Activate your iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G without official iPhone Carrier SIM

Sherif Hasim has figured out an easy way to activate iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G without needing the official iPhone carrier SIM. Please note it doesn’t unlock your iPhone but it activates it. But it helps you to hactivate your iPhone without the need to hack your iPhone.
Sherif had also discovered an exploit in the baseband (05.12.01) that was bundled with iPhone OS 3.1.3 earlier in the year. Activating your iPhone means giving it access to the Home screen by telling your iPhone that you are using one of the iPhone’s official carriers. Activating your iPhone is done through iTunes in order to use it with an official iPhone carrier. Read more of this post

Skype finally released with iOS 4 backgrounding

Skype was one of the companies that joined Apple at their iOS 4 developer preview back in April. They hopped on stage and showed how users can have Skype running in the background ready to receive calls with VoIP. Well after the iPhone 4 launched everyone was kind of scratching their heads wondering where Skype was with this new functionality. Well they are here now and that is all that matters. If you have Skype on your phone you should head over to the App Store and download the latest version. Here is what is new in the latest version… Read more of this post

Bloomberg says the is iPhone coming to Verizon in January

Another day another Verizon rumor, but this one seems pretty credible. Bloomberg says that it has confirmed with 2 sources who are working on the project, that the iPhone will be coming to Verizon in January 2011. Bloomberg goes on to say that the iPhone exclusivity will end at the same time that the iPhone goes on sale on Verizon. So is this something AT&T has to be worried about?
