UPDATE: [Video] Apple’s iPhone 4 now unlocked

@Planetbeing from the iPhone Dev Team tweeted about 10 hours ago that he has successfully unlocked personal iPhone 4. Although no code or other information has been posted, the soft-unlocked iPhone 4 has managed to be seen in photos, like the example above. The software solution to unlock iPhone 4 will allow users to use their iPhone with any GSM carrier instead of being locked to an official iPhone carrier like AT&T, which can be extremely useful when you’re travelling abroad. We hope to have more information posted up shortly. UPDATE: We now have a video up!

Apple iPhone 4 Review Roundup

We’ve taken the time to assemble the best official and unofficial reviews from around the web on the all new Apple iPhone 4. As expected, there are some wonderful reviews and some not so much, but all in all, Apple’s iPhone 4 has garnered some pretty good reviews. Also included are some unboxing videos of some lucky few who received their iPhone 4 early. Read more of this post

Side by Side Breakdown: iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G

Well today was a busy day (and a little embarrasing) for Apple. Not only did their WiFi service not work during one of their demonstrations, but most of the glory of the iPhone had already been outed by Gizmodo. In return for ruining their iPhone 4 glorious debut, Gizmo wasn’t invited to this year’s WWDC.

But that is neither head nor there, what is great is that the iPhone 4 is official, has some cool goodies and coming out at the end of June! So for all of you needing the latest greatest handset from Apple, your wait is only a little while longer. For those of you who’ve already read the specs on the site or blogs, you may still be considering the one alternative to iPhone 4; the HTC EVO 4G. In my honest opinion, I love the design of Apple’s new iPhone 4 but I feel that several items are lackluster to suit my personal taste. #1 no flash. Sorry Apple, but I want to be able to view flash, like when I was at the dentist office earlier today for a check up and while waiting for my Doctor, I was watching a walk-through of the new iPhone 4 on viddler. I sure couldn’t do that on the new iPhone 4. #2 Cost. It is going to cost me an arm and leg, close to $120-$150 per month, to get the same service I can get from Sprint (with unlimited data + free mobile to mobile calling) for under $90 per month, with tax. According to BillShrink, it would cost me almost $600 more over a two year period and that doesn’t include the fact that AT&T will not have unlimited data any longer.

So to each his own. I love the look at extras the new iPhone 4 comes with but I also know that there will be even better Android based handsets, that are far more open, get updated more frequently and in several ways are superior to iPhone 4 in a few key areas. Then again, the iPhone 4 new screen resolution, addition of a gyroscope (which opens up all kind of app possibilities, Flash drive, talk time (quoted not actually tested, but Apple is usually good about their testing quotes), an AppStore which is far superior than anyones and A4 processor are a pretty compelling reason to get the iPhone 4. So this boils down to your personal preference. If I had an extra $600 a year, I would probably get an iPhone 4 too. My recommendation, get the phone you wan and works for you the best – because you’ll probably be a whole lot happier than listening to tech blogs or your fanboy friends.

WWDC 2010: iPhone OS 4 No More! iOS 4!

At WWDC conference, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would be changing the name of iPhone OS 4 to iOS 4. They want to connect the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch all together. Steve Jobs said “And we’re going even further and giving it some metal.” Heh. “It’s our most ambitious release to date — over 1500 developer APIs. Over 100 new user features, the biggest being multitasking. Some people were saying we weren’t first with multitasking — the same was true with cut/copy/paste. But we took some time to figure out how to do it right.” The only problem using iOS is that Cisco actually owns the “iOS” trademark right here. So will Apple pay the money to get that trademark for themselves? Most likely. iOS 4 is going to be available on June 21st, three days before the phone launches. It will be available for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and iPod Touch and it will be free for Touch users. Read more of this post

Steve Jobs D8 Interview Full Interview Video

Last Tuesday, an anticipated crowd watched as Steve Jobs appeared at the D8 conference to talk about Apple, iPads, and other topics. The full interview video has been put online at the conference website. Living on the East Coast, I have extra time to wait for the WWDC party to start on the West Coast so if you have time to waste before then, you should check out the 90-plus minute interview.  Here is a preview of the interview with Jobs addressing the lost 4G iPhone prototype.

Is it official? New name is the iPhone HD? Comes in Colors?

All the blogs and papers are trying to figure out the name of the next gen iPhone since Gizmo’s well publicized recent outing. Well we knew that it would be either the iPhone 4G, iPhone 4 or iPhone HD. It seems as the captured screen shot from @TheTechReviewer, of what appears to be  in-store computers of the Apple’s new iPhone HD. It seems as though the leak also contains more revealing information. In the ad it states that this new iPhone HD is “smarter, better, faster.” Also states in the bottom left corner of iPhone colors? There was also something I mentioned recently in the Talking with Tnkgrl #25 podcast: that Apple should do like the Nano and release the iPhone HD  in colors. It appears my wish and millions of others is about to come to fruition.

Oh but wait! That small picture looks pretty darn familiar, remember? I posted this information of an artist render over at Spazio Cellulare. I personally think this is very fake but the name may be real. So although Apple may be announcing the next gen as the next gen iPhone as the HD, 4 or 4G, the colored phones may still be a figmant of our imagination or at least until Monday June 7th, when we find out for sure.

iPhone 3G 8GB gets kicked to the curb; new iPhone hitting stores by June 18th

Rumors and reports are pretty cool most of the time, except when they actually start to flow on top of each other and make some sense. BGR reported earlier today by one of his tipsters that AT&T is starting to unload the iPhone 3G GB, as they will no longer be available for sale via AT&T:

June 4, 2010

iPhone 3G 8 GB is Out of Stock

Effective immediately, iPhone 3G 8GB is Out of Stock.  Please refer all customers to iPhone 3GS 16 GB and 32 GB models.

FAQ:
Q:  When will we receive inventory for iPhone 3G 8GB?
A:  At this time, we do not know when more iPhone 3G 8GB will arrive.

Q:  Are there any iPhone 3G 8 GB available in COR if my customer can purchase there?
A:  Check with your local COR stores to see if they have any inventory available.

This could mean that the iPhone 3GS would drop to $99 dollars with the impending release of the next gen iPhone. Skip ahead a few hours later and BGR reports that AT&T employees have received very ‘high’ quotas for the month of June. With WWDC next week, it is anticipated that the release date of the new next gen iPhone 4G or HD may be released as soon as June 18th, which is a Friday. Considering Sprint has had a pretty hectic and successful launch day with the HTC EVO 4G, this could force Apple to bump up the launch window even earlier and try and nab a few of the folks considering an EVO 4G running Android.

[Update – yes it does] Next gen iPhone 4G/HD to come in white too?

Render of next gen iPhone

Seeing the iPhone 4G or HD in white would be nice! But alas, this may be just a dream by to modeling master Martin uit Utrecht’s work. Thanks to his awesomeness at using Rhinoceros and Maxwell, he was able to create this wonderful images of what is possibly to come in the next gen iPhone. What is interesting to note is that the model does coincide with reports of a white faceplate and white back cover for the next gen iPhone.

What would make a white iPhone even better? How about a color stack of iPhones like the iPod Nanos!  We can all dream but I believe the next logical move after the release of the next gen iPhone (in black and white) would be to colorize the outer part of the handsets and give the customers more choices. Doing so would ensure Apple has an even larger sales cycle with the yet-to-be introduced next gen iPhone (4G or HD).

Update: Power Book Medic got a hold of some real pics of the white iPhone and not like the renders above. The outer casing does come in white and looks pretty darn appealing to myself and plenty of other people I know.

Real pic of the next gen iPhone

Hit the break for more.

The iPhone 4 put under a microscope, 320 pixels per inch found

The iPhone 4 is going to be announced in just over a week at WWDC. Ever since the leaked iPhone made its way out of the Gizmodo photo booth, it was speculated that the iPhone 4 will have a 960×640 resolution screen. This is twice the resolution of the old iPhone both long and wide. Read more of this post
