Droid X does higher resolution than Apple’s new retina display? [Update -Verizon says no]

Today Verizon’s Droid X teaser site went live. This is exciting for a number of reasons. Here is why. Back in November of 2009, Motorola introduced the 854×480 screen. It was the first fully capable smartphone that had everything the iPhone, G1, and/or Palm Pre had, as well as a beautiful high-resolution display. At the time everyone was using 480×320 resolution screens. Shortly after you started seeing tons of Android phones coming out with high-resolution displays. The question then became, will Apple finally bump up its resolution on the next generation iPhone? Well, June 7th came and they blew everyone’s mind. They didn’t just catch up to Android’s new standard resolution, they passed it. The iPhone 4 will have a stunning 960×640 resolution screen. The question now is. How long is it going to take one of the many manufacturers to catch up to Apple’s new high? Well according to Verizon, it will happen the day before the actual iPhone goes on sale. According to Verizon’s brand new teaser page, the new Droid X from Motorola is going to have a 720p screen. Yes you heard that correct, 720p! True high-definition resolution on a touchscreen phone. It seems so hard to believe and I feel skeptical, but its hard to disbelieve if Verizon has it on their main teaser page. Look at the imagine above if you too are struggling to believe it. Apple has been out done just a day before their phone is released. Will this be the new standard on Android handsets? Read more of this post

Last Tuesday, an anticipated crowd watched as Steve Jobs appeared at the D8 conference to talk about Apple, iPads, and other topics. Living on the East Coast, I have extra time to wait for the WWDC party to start on the West Coast so if you have time to waste before then, you should check out the 90-plus minute interview.  Here is a preview of the interview with Jobs addressing the lost 4G iPhone prototype.

Verizon spokesman says “no plans to carry the iPhone in the immediate future”

Vodpod videos no longer available.

During an interview from Beet.tv, Verizon Spokesman John Johnson stated:

Q: Let me ask you first of all about Verizon and the iPhone. What is happening, if anything? What is the status?

A: No one ever asks that question. (Smiles) So, no plans to carry the iPhone in the immediate future, but you’ve gotta look at the incredible excitement around the Android devices…

These comments should be taken with a grain of salt as TheStreet reports that analyst Ashok Kumar claims that Apple is getting ready to do a possible holiday launch on Verizon:

The Mac maker has also told its manufacturing partner Asustek to plan on starting full-scale production of a CDMA version of the iPhone to be available at Verizon as early as November, Kumar says. The report is yet another confirmation of Apple’s long-awaited Verizon iPhone, which still awaits final approval from the two companies that have not always seen eye-to-eye.

iPhone 3G 8GB gets kicked to the curb; new iPhone hitting stores by June 18th

Rumors and reports are pretty cool most of the time, except when they actually start to flow on top of each other and make some sense. BGR reported earlier today by one of his tipsters that AT&T is starting to unload the iPhone 3G GB, as they will no longer be available for sale via AT&T:

June 4, 2010

iPhone 3G 8 GB is Out of Stock

Effective immediately, iPhone 3G 8GB is Out of Stock.  Please refer all customers to iPhone 3GS 16 GB and 32 GB models.

FAQ:
Q:  When will we receive inventory for iPhone 3G 8GB?
A:  At this time, we do not know when more iPhone 3G 8GB will arrive.

Q:  Are there any iPhone 3G 8 GB available in COR if my customer can purchase there?
A:  Check with your local COR stores to see if they have any inventory available.

This could mean that the iPhone 3GS would drop to $99 dollars with the impending release of the next gen iPhone. Skip ahead a few hours later and BGR reports that AT&T employees have received very ‘high’ quotas for the month of June. With WWDC next week, it is anticipated that the release date of the new next gen iPhone 4G or HD may be released as soon as June 18th, which is a Friday. Considering Sprint has had a pretty hectic and successful launch day with the HTC EVO 4G, this could force Apple to bump up the launch window even earlier and try and nab a few of the folks considering an EVO 4G running Android.

[Update – yes it does] Next gen iPhone 4G/HD to come in white too?

Render of next gen iPhone

Seeing the iPhone 4G or HD in white would be nice! But alas, this may be just a dream by to modeling master Martin uit Utrecht’s work. Thanks to his awesomeness at using Rhinoceros and Maxwell, he was able to create this wonderful images of what is possibly to come in the next gen iPhone. What is interesting to note is that the model does coincide with reports of a white faceplate and white back cover for the next gen iPhone.

What would make a white iPhone even better? How about a color stack of iPhones like the iPod Nanos!  We can all dream but I believe the next logical move after the release of the next gen iPhone (in black and white) would be to colorize the outer part of the handsets and give the customers more choices. Doing so would ensure Apple has an even larger sales cycle with the yet-to-be introduced next gen iPhone (4G or HD).

Update: Power Book Medic got a hold of some real pics of the white iPhone and not like the renders above. The outer casing does come in white and looks pretty darn appealing to myself and plenty of other people I know.

Real pic of the next gen iPhone

Hit the break for more.

The iPhone 4 put under a microscope, 320 pixels per inch found

The iPhone 4 is going to be announced in just over a week at WWDC. Ever since the leaked iPhone made its way out of the Gizmodo photo booth, it was speculated that the iPhone 4 will have a 960×640 resolution screen. This is twice the resolution of the old iPhone both long and wide. Read more of this post

Verizon won’t get iPhone next week; most likely later this year

In a report published by Brighthand today, it states that Verizon will not see it’s CDMA version of the iPhone until later this year. According to a research note for its investors, Piper Jafray stated:

“We believe that it is unlikely that the next generation iPhone will be available at Verizon (or Sprint) at launch; rather, it is more likely that it remains exclusively available at AT&T in the U.S. at launch,” Gene Munster with Piper Jaffray wrote in a research note to investors.

The article also points out some related reports:

According to a recent unconfirmed report, Apple has hired a company in Taiwan to produce a version of the iPhone with support for CDMA wireless networks, the cellular-wireless standard used by Verizon and Sprint. Production is supposedly going to begin in August or September. In addition, unnamed sources at several large companies have claimed to be testing a version of the iPhone with support for Verizon’s nascent 4G network. This LTE-powered model will allegedly be released this summer. If these unsubstantiated reports are correct, Apple will release a version of its smartphone for AT&T first, but a model for Verizon will come a few months later.
The reports do make sense. Everyone says a dual-band CDMA/4G can’t be released because Verizon’s network is not yet running/nor would it be running in several markets. But people need to take a step back and see that Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G, running on WiMAX, is one of the most hotly anticipated phones due this summer, and it is being released on a 4G WiMAX network that is not yet available in several major markets.
I know that a Verizon iPhone would be a huge boost to Verizon as well as Apple in handset sales and shared revenue for music, movie and app downloads. It’s a win-win situation for both Verizon and Apple in the end.
