Netflix app updated, now works on your iPhone and iPod Touch

Today the long-awaited Netflix app is now available for download on your iPod Touch and iPhone. This isn’t just an app to edit and change your queue. You can actually resume or start playback on movies and TV shows in your queue! You can do so over both WiFi and 3G. We haven’t tested the app ourselves just yet, but we assume there will be some sort of video degradation to compensate for the lack of bandwidth while using 3G. We are crossing our fingers in hopes that it is better than the iPad version. Viewing videos on the iPad version is fine, but browsing the content is completely awful and laggy.  It is the exact same interface as the website except it is slow and gets stuck all the time. The more mobile-like interface on the iPhone version will probably clear up so of those issues. So what are you waiting for? Head over to the App Store and download Netflix.

Multifl0w brings multitasking to iPad, improves multitasking on the iPhone

I will preface this by saying that the application is for jailbreak users only. You didn’t think Apple allowed an app that changed multitasking in iOS did you? Well they didn’t, instead the creators of MultiflOw have their app for sale on the Cydia store for jailbroken iOS users. MultiflOw gives iOS users a very similar multitasking experience as WebOS or as the Safari browser tabs management. You can zoom out and see a cached image of all your open applications, then choose which one you want to jump back to. This application will definitely work better on the iPhone 4 compared to the iPad since the iPad only has 256MB of RAM, but it will work on either none the less. Now if only Apple could implement multitasking like this rather than the somewhat boring way of viewing different icons in a tray that they have now. Want to see MultiflOw in action? Check out the video demo after the break, then head over to MultiflOw’s website to learn more.

Android already outselling the iPhone by 41% worldwide according to Apple and Google

I want to preface this by saying that these numbers are all based off numbers Google and Apple have given. Okay now let’s get started. Today Apple had its financial results. What they’ve told us is that they have sold 8.4 million iPhones in the last 3 months. Yes this number is huge, but how big is it? Does Android even compare to Apple in terms of sales? According to Apple and Google, the answer is yes. Read more of this post

RIM responds to Apple’s “it’s not just iPhone” claim, antennas work on Blackberries

Today was the big day that Apple held an out of the blue press conference in response to the growing criticisms of its new iPhone 4 antenna. After Apple said that the iPhone 4 is not the only phone with an issue of signal loss while gripping the phone via the ‘death grip’, they showed video demos of other phones doing the same. RIM was on of the victims in Apple’s attack. As you can imagine, RIM was none too happy about a Blackberry be shown as one of the phones with an antenna issue. So in response to Apple, here is what RIM had to say… Read more of this post

More iPhone 4 issues piling on, broken proximity sensors and cracked glass

Like we have said many times before, with great power comes great responsibility. Well Spiderman said that, but we acknowledged that Apple is now a great power and they are going to have to take some responsibility for hardware/manufacturing defects. So here is the run down of todays issues. Some Gizmodo readers are reporting that after dropping their iPhones from relatively short heights, the back panel of the phone is cracking. As you can see in this photo…

[Update – It is here!] iOS 4 is coming today, excitement is in the air if you’ve got an iPhone 4 or 3GS

Today is the big day for folks with the iPhone 3GS and 3rd gen iPod Touch. iOS 4 is expected to hit sometime today. There is no exact time for its arrival, but we will be hitting the refresh button on iTunes repeatedly until we get it. Are you as pumped as we are? Multitasking, Springboard back-rounds, Folders, Bluetooth keyboard support, threaded mail, screen rotation lock, and easily accessible iPod controls. Bring it on Apple!

Update – iOS 4 is now available for download via iTunes 9.2! It is available for the 3G (but with heavily limited functionality), 3GS, and iPod Touch. If you haven’t already, go get your update! Make sure to update all of your apps from iTunes because some developers may have added new multitasking or some other iOS 4 features to the application.

Samsung says AMOLED is better than Apple’s Retina display on iPhone 4

image

After WWDC, Apple’s biggest new feature in iPhone 4 was their new 960×640 retina display. With over 300PPI Apple says it is better than OLED because of OLED’s readability in sunlight. Samsung says that is all well and good, and the new high resolution is nice, but the Retina display doesn’t stand up to Samsung’s new Super AMOLED screen technology. According to Samsung, the iPhone screen is only 3-5% more sharp than the Galaxy S, but wastes 30% more battery. Also the contrast ratio doesn’t even compare. The new iPhone 4 features an 800:1 contrast ratio while the Nexus One’s AMOLED features a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. They go in to say that IPS technology will never catch up to AMOLED. So which is better? We will have to see how easy it is to use Samsung’s new screens in daylight as well as a side by side comparison. We prefer AMOLED indoors and LCD outdoors, but we will have to wait and see how the new models look for ourselves.

Update: Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen is super bright and clear in the sunlight. Now all we need is the iPhone 4 video of it’s screen in sunlight for comparison (thanks Mara!)

Rich Dellinger leaves Palm and returns to Apple, bringing better notifications?

WebOS is a fine OS without a doubt. It has been hindered by its carrier choice and its lack of quality hardware, but the OS is definitely something to write home about. With that in mind, the situation Palm is in right now is causing a lot of their employees to flock to other companies. This time its Rich Dellinger, and he is leaving Palm and returning to Apple where he originally came from. His new job title is “Senior User Interface Designer”. According to Precentral, Rich Dellinger is solely responsible for the unique notification system in WebOS. The one area where iPhone now lacks more than any other platform is notifications. With Apple adding more features that can tie into push notifications as well as the new native notifications, users are receiving more and more alerts all the time. This isn’t something you want with the iPhone OS being the way it is now. Notifications are incredible intrusive and can completely interrupt anything you are doing. Not only do they interrupt what you are doing, but also, if dismissed, notifications disappear. So if you forget what you got the notification for a few minutes ago there is now way to go back and find out what it was. Hopefully Rich can bring a revamped notification system to the iPhone. As for Palm, they already have great notifications, but lets hope all these job changes aren’t a sign of a dark low sale future.

WWDC 2010: Apple introduces ‘Facetime’ for iPhone OS 4

Via Macrumors

Facetime is an application that will be on iPhone OS 4. You can use the front facing or rear facing camera over WiFi only to make video calls with other people using the Facetime application on iPhone OS 4. Apple spent some time demoing it and this new video chat feature was their ‘one more thing’. It has been a while since Steve Jobs had a one more thing, but its good to have it back. So will you start to use video chat instead of regular phone calls? I would replace phone calls myself with video chat if I still made phone calls. Lets see how this one plays out. I hope schools, teachers, and parents are ready for the future of sexting. Yes I hate that word too!
