T-Mobile UK decides to cut data plans to 500MB/month – Shoots own foot

Wow.  Apparently, T-Mobile UK has made the exceedingly ridiculous decision to cut its users data plans to a paltry 500MB/month, effectively ostracizing most smart phone users.  Citing “fair use” violations, T-Mobile UK was quoted as saying

Browsing means looking at websites and checking email, but not watching videos, downloading files or playing games. We’ve got a fair use policy but ours means that you’ll always be able to browse the internet, it’s only when you go over the fair use amount that you won’t be able to download, stream and watch video clips.

Either their network is suffering from some serious strain, or T-Mobile UK has decided it’s 2005 and is adjusting their pricing as such.  Thankfully, customers stateside will retain the existing 5GB/month bandwidth limit, though there’s no word on whether or not it’s not (tricky double-negative there) coming to the US.  Hit the link for more information

T-Mobile and Nokia Siemens announce new HSPA speeds of more than 650Mbps

In a joint statement, T-Mobile and Nokia Siemens Networks said they are working on “theoretical maximum speeds” of 650Mbps+, on their Long Term HSPA Evolution.

To boost the download capacity to several hundred megabits per second the companies suggest combining up to eight channels into one data link, and in the process provide peak data rates of up to 672Mbit/sec. To overcome spectrum constraints, operators will be able to combine spectrum from more than one frequency band. Another way to increase download speeds is to download data from multiple base stations at the same time.

While this may be good news for T-Mobile in 2013, when the network should be fully deployed and their 3G technology that is backwards compatible with the current HSPA networks.

T-Mobile G2 will have Android 2.2 and only 800Mhz processor

T-Mobile keeps giving out piece by piece information on the G2 and today they have revealed a few specs about the device. When you purchase the G2 it will be running Android 2.2 vanilla (as seen by the pic, no Sense) and be Flash 10.1 ready. Another tidbit is that the device has a 800MHz processor inside, down from other Android devices running 1Ghz and upwards. I have seen disappointment all over about this but we should not give up hope, maybe the G2 will be optimized to use all of the processing power, but still makes you wonder why they chose to go with it. Pricing and availability is still up in the air but we can an expect an announcement soon I’m sure.

HP hires former HTC exec to head up Palm handset sales

It appears HP had done some early pre-planning of their road-map with the Palm acquisition. About three weeks before HP picked up Palm for $1.2 billion in April, the company recruited Todd Achilles as its vice presdient of telco sales. Todd who? Todd Achilles, the former HTC exec that ran the United States office of HTC in Bellevue, Washington. Prior to that, Todd was also the executive director at T-Mobile USA, working on the company’s handset strategy. We hope that Mr. Achilles will bring his sales and direction know-how, coupled with HP’s brilliant manufacturing prowess and build one fine webOS mobile handset.
