Microsoft to hold all day press event on October 11th

We all know Windows Phone 7 is just around the corner. Microsoft promised it would be released “in time for the holidays”. It looks as though they are going to keep true to that promise and give the official launch date, prices, and vendors on October 11th. Engadget received an invitation to a Microsoft press event in London on October 11th, thus the speculation of a Phone 7 announcement. The event runs from 2:00 PM to 5:30PM. This, much like many other press events, will probably be show and tell with some hands on and play time to follow. We will be keeping an eye out for any new news and surprises to come out of the event. Yes Microsoft you can blow everyone’s mind by saying copy/paste and multi-tasking will be available at launch.

ASUS Windows Phone 7 shows up in Pakistan

We don’t have much information on this but to say that what you are looking at is an ASUS handset running Windows Phone 7. It made it’s appearance somewhere in Pakistan via Shaistjafri (who has now protected their tweets). There seems to be some production numbers at the top of the device which may indicate that this is a field testing device.

Windows Phone 7 extensive walk-through, still looks pretty

As we all wait patiently for Windows Phone 7 to finally arrive in some official form, others are gathering as much information as possible. This is one of the most locked down phone OS’s these days. Apple used to be the king of locked down surprises, but it seems lately the only OS that really doesn’t have all of its details leaked is Windows Phone 7. Well here is what we have for now, a pretty in depth video walk-through of what we have to look forward to. There doesn’t seem to be anything completely different from what we have seen before, but we still love what we see. This really can’t come soon enough!

Check out the video after the break… Read more of this post

Recent data shows iPhone still in a commanding lead over Android

Nielsen Wire has put up some graphs, charts, and the usual yesterday. Measuring the ever impressive smartphone market share. As you can see in the graph above, the iPhone still holds a commanding lead. So commanding in fact that it is still 3 times larger than that of the  Android OS. The smartphone market in general is said to have grown to 23% in quarter 1 of 2010 up from 16% in quarter 4 of 2009. During this growth both Android and iPhone OS grew 2%. In that same period of time, current leader RIM and Windows Mobile, both lost 2% of their market share. So what does this all mean in a nutshell? iPhone is huge, Android is growing, RIM and Microsoft are slowly but surely losing and that Palm and Nokia need to get it together in North America. I think it also shows that smartphones in general still have room to grow. The fact that only 23% of phone users use a smartphone means there are still so many millions of potential customers that these companies can still attract. Come on feature phone users buy a smartphone!

Windows Mobile 6.5.3 still chuggin, LG Fathom brings new hope

There isn’t a whole lot of Windows Mobile news lately. Hell, there isn’t even a lot of Windows Phone 7 news lately. That is not stopping LG from pushing out their brand new Fathom. Ironic name, hard to fathom the fact that there is still interest in 6.5 with the release of Phone 7 being so close. Aside from the OS itself, which is actually my new favorite version of Windows Mobile (6.5.3), the hardware itself is pretty spectacular. The phone will be running 6.5.3 which is the latest and greatest version of Windows Mobile and it has been optimized for touch input. It has a a 3.2 MP camera (which is beginning to get a little outdated) a 3.2″ touch screen, a 1Ghz snapdragon processor, WiFi b/g/n, a full 4 row slide out keyboard with a 4 way directional pad, and will cost $149.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate (after signing contract of course). The phone looks nice, the OS is a bit dated compared to the new stuff we are seeing from Apple, Android, and even Microsoft’s own Windows Phone 7, but some people need Windows Mobile for work and this seems like a good choice. It will be available on Verizon June 3rd so get out your company’s spending pool and get ready!

Microsoft’s “Time To Share” event on April 12th, may be the courier unveiling?

Engadget, among others, received an invite to a Microsoft event called “Time To Share”. It is still unknown exactly what the event is specifically for, but we do know the event is held at a pretty unique time. The event invite is received days after the iPad launch and the actual event itself is will be just 4 short days after Apple’s own iPhone OS 4 event. So let the speculation begin. Gizmodo thinks it is going to be the launch of Microsoft’s Pink mobile Phone platform which Is expected to be the replacement Sidekick for Microsoft in the ‘less than smartphone’ segment of the market. Me? Well I think this might be the unveiling of Microsoft’s courier project. The timing is perfect and makes sense. If they want to slow down some of the excitement on Apple’s new iPad than they are going to have to employ some excitement into their own product. We will have to wait and see. We will certainly let you know exactly what happens as soon as we know.
