White EVO 4G to grace Sprint? Yes!

Sprint users no longer have to purchase the EVO 4G dressed up in white from Best Buy any longer. Sprint is beginning to receive these White EVO 4G handsets in corporate stores. So what are you waiting for? Go get your EVO 4G action on!

Sprint: 4G hits Los Angeles on December 1st (other cities to follow soon?)

According to a Tweet on Twitter, Sprint is going to be lighting up the L.A., California scene with 4G on December 1st. In addition, I am able to personally confirm that Sprint is indeed testing 4G in Sacramento, California as well. From what I have been seeing on speed tests lately, Sprint has a huge advantage over Verizon at this point with it’s WiMax speedy service. So brace yourselves L.A., you are about to get some serious data speeds on your 4G enabled Epic or Evo handset.

Review: Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G in daily use

Sprint’s EVO 4G is the company’s first flagship Android 4G device. This is not the phone for those of you that are looking for a smaller device; you may just want to move along now. But for those of you ready to fork over your hard earned money for an Android handset, the EVO4G comes packed with pretty much everything imaginable: 1Ghz Qualcomm 8650 SnapDragon processor, 4.3″ LCD 480×800, 512MB RAM, 8 MP main camera capturing 720p video with another 1.3 MP front facing camera, 4G and 4G bands, FM Radio, TV out HDMI and a 1500mAh battery.  Arguably, we feel that this is still one of best phones on the market today; hence why Sprint can’t seem to keep them in stock. We tested this phone on a daily basis and I personally used it as my main line for an extensive period of time. Hit the break to read the entire review. Read more of this post

Why iPhone 4 is still playing catch up to Android

Since the World Wide Developers Conference, the iPhone has been given new life and it’s being called the iPhone 4. It is said that when Apple does something, they do it well. Lets get one thing straight; this article is not meant to take away from anyone who plans to get the iPhone 4, but someone has to point out the phone’s flaws. After all, Jobs would never do such a thing. So how can such a fantastic device still crumble to Android? Its all about the limitations; Apples largest issue.

HTC EVO 4G: Froyo comes with hidden features

There a few hidden features that aren’t listed on the Sprint EVO 4G Froyo 2.2 update. These hidden features may be useful to some and to others, not at all.

  • Android Market interface
  • Screen rotation is now possible in both directions
  • You can copy text from emails (using the standard Gmail app): go to “menu,” select “more,” and there’s an option to select text. Position the cursor where you want, and press and hold to copy to the clipboard
  • Camcorder app now encodes video inH.264, not just MPEG4 or H.263
  • Handset now supports Hebrew font
  • Eight active icons instead of the six when holding down the home button

Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G Android Froyo 2.2 now ready for your downloads

Got a Sprint HTC EVO 4G? Been waiting for Android 2.2? You don’t need to wait any further. If you don’t mind performing a self-install, you can head on over to the update link, download the latest version HTC’s and drop this puppy on your phone.

Instructions a relatively simple (I’m doing this as I post): drop the .zip file to the root directory on your SD card.

  1. Download the Android 2.2 firmware update DOWNLOAD LINK
  2. Rename the file “update.zip” (make sure you don’t accidentally name it update.zip.ZIP).
  3. Move the zip file to the root directory of your EVO’s SD card.
  4. Shut down your phone and restart it in recovery mode by holding volume “DOWN BUTTON” while powering up the device.
  5. Select Recovery Mode.
  6. Hold the volume Up button and Power
  7. Select “apply update.zip”

[Update] Looks like Android police and HTC for that matter are getting a ton of hits. Just keep trying and they should be back up in no time. I also posted a link for the file I just uploaded. This was direct from the HTC url I grabbed before the servers crashed.

[Update 2] Here is another mirror for the file.

Sprint Nextel posts subscriber gain; beats Street on revenue

Sprint, the third largest carrier in the U.S. reported it had lost fewer valuable contract customers in the second quarter than Wall Street expected. Sprint list 228,000 in the monthly bill paying subscribers, which is a big decrease from the expected 335,000 from Analyst predictions.

The quarterly losses rose to $760 million, or 25 cents per share, up from $384 million, or 13 cents a share the previous year – this also included a charge of 10 cents per share for deferred tax assets. Sprint shares have risen 17 percent overall since early July and were up 2.4 percent as of today.

Sprint’s move-ahead with Android, particularly the HTC EVO 4G, touting the 4G WiMax network, provided much of the help in retaining and gaining new subscribers. In addition, Sprint focus on customer service has done a 180 from not long ago.  The everything plans have really assisted Sprint in retaining subscribers while other carriers begin to charge for data or have removed unlimited data altogether. Most notably is the everything plans Sprint offers, which is the only one in the industry which allows consumers to have unlimited calling to any mobile network with unlimited data and text messaging. Churn rates have decreased and it appears that Sprint is headed in the right direction.

HTC’s Christmas Gift for all: Android 2.2

Santa knows what you want for Christmas HTC Android owners, the Froyo 2.2 update, and (Spoiler) he will be bringing it. Talking to Pocket-Lint.com, Eric Lin, HTC’s global PR and online community manager, gave relief to those HTC owners of when to expect the Froyo update. While he says the update process is difficult because they want to make sure everything is fine, he does say it is going quicker then expected.

“I don’t think you’re going to see that really long six month, seven month lag, like you saw in the updates from 1.5 to 2.1, simply because it’s a less severe change. Switching from 2.1 to 2.2, they made a lot of tweaks, but they didn’t make any gigantic changes, so it should be a much swifter process”.

But me personally, I am not looking forward to 2.2, I am looking foward to Gingerbread, that big 3.0 update and he does talk about if and when they will get it, when to expect it on any device.

“I don’t think so. I don’t know what Gingerbread involves, but I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas. And since Google hasn’t made any announcements as to when Gingerbread is going to come out, I’m not going to make that guess, it could be Q1 of next year”.

It is good to know that HTC keeps everyone in the loop and while it is a long wait, it is better then nothing some other users are experiencing.
